UNITED STATES COAST GUARD STATION

Menemsha Boathouse

CHILMARK, MA

Station-Menemsha-Boathouse-2.jpg

BWA Architecture provided the design to replace the US Coast Guard Station boathouse at Menemsha, which had been destroyed by fire in the summer of 2010. The new 2-story design of the boathouse includes a new boat ramp, maintenance bay, workshop area, equipment storage, telecom room, mechanical and electrical rooms, lockers and restrooms.

In order to garner community support and approval from State Historical Preservation Office, the new building replicated many of the historical details of the original building. The new boathouse set on new reinforced concrete pilings over the harbor, was constructed using reinforced CMU walls faced with fiber cement shingles, precast reinforced concrete floor planks, structural steel roof trusses, and a pitched roof with asphalt shingles. Low-impact technologies were used during construction, sensitive to the ecological and historical surroundings.
