Newtowne Court Modernization
CAMBRIDGE, MA

BWA Architecture performed an assessment, follow-on design and construction administration services for the complete modernization of Newtowne Court. Renovations were designed to promote the owner’s goal for energy efficiency, sustainability design, minimizing operating costs and improving habitability and the tenant experience. The scope of work included comprehensive unit improvements, common area updates, new building systems and extensive sitework and landscaping improvements. In addition, the building’s exteriors were completely repointed, new energy efficient windows installed and new roofing with additional insulation was provided. BWA and CHA engaged with the residents throughout the design process and added amenities such as an artificial turf fenced ball playing field and new playgrounds based on resident input. CHA and their residents are very happy with the renovations.
The Newtowne Court multi-family development consists of eight, 2-story brick walk-up buildings with 268 family apartments. BWA worked with CHA to devise a comprehensive phasing plan as the buildings were partially occupied throughout construction. The project was completed over 36 phases making use of the two smaller buildings on site as “hotel” buildings for temporary relocation of residents.
