Winchester Center Commuter Rail Station
WINCHESTER, MA

BWA Architecture provided design services for the redevelopment of a commuter rail station situated in the heart of a historic New England community. Located on a granite stone viaduct, over twenty feet above the streets, this project consists of inbound and outbound platforms, each over 700 feet long and with long sections of canopy.
The scope of work included the redesign of stairs, new elevators and updated ramps for accessible platform access. The new station design also includes benches, bike storage and other amenities. BWA worked with representatives of the Town of Winchester to develop station options that are sensitive to the historic downtown area, are safe and accessible for passengers, and comply with the durability standards of the MBTA.
In keeping with the prominent stonework of the historic viaduct, the architecture of the new station includes renewed granite veneer, rusticated precast concrete wall panels, and cast stone trim. The steel canopies reflect the profiles of the original station canopies, complemented with crisply detailed glazing for the elevators and wind barriers.
